Books and illustrated volumes
At the start of the 20th century, Germany and Mongolia began to forge closer links as the first Mongolian students visited Germany. Many Germans also travelled to Mongolia. As a result of this lively exchange we now have a wide range of books and reports on the subject of Mongolia. We would like to mention a few of them here.
- Mongolia Country Guide by Trent Holden, Adam Karlin, Michael Kohn and Adam Skolnick, Lonely Planet Publications (2018), ISBN-10: 1786575728, a travel guide.
- Beasts, Men and Gods by Ferdinand Ossendowski, first published in 1924 and reissued in 2001 by Strange Verlag under ISBN-10: 3890648101.
This book, fictional in part, deals with the period of upheavel in Mongolia around 1920. The protagonist, a Tsarist official from Sibiria fleeing from the communists, finds himself caught up in the Mongolian conflict between Chinese occupiers, Mongols, Belarusians led by Baron Ungern-Sternberg and the Red Army. A captivating story. The Gutenberg Project offers the English version online on http://www.gutenberg.org.
