Take a tour with us in search of Genghis Khan and the Secret History of the Mongols! As we wander through the nature of eastern Mongolia, we discover historical monuments, rock paintings and ancient inscriptions. This tour offers many opportunities to enjoy the vastness of Mongolia and recuperate in its natural surroundings. Instead of hiking you can rest and enjoy nature. You will visit nomad families and get an insight into how they live.

Travel route

Day 1
You are picked up by our tour guide. Today we visit the National Museum. You spend the night in the yurt camp on the edge of the capital.

Day 2 Drive
We are pciked up by our driver at the hotel and set out eastwards to the home of Genghis Khan. We drive to Khukh Lake, where the Mongolian general Temuujin was given the title Genghis Khan in 1189 and appointed leader of the Mongolian tribes. (B,L,D)

Day 3 Hike / Drive
Today we go hiking, finishing up in the vicinity of Baldan Bereeven Monastery. You decide how long you want the hike to be. We can drive the rest of the way. (B,L,D)

Day 4 Hike
Today we stay in this region. On our hike we visit the Baldan Bereeven Monastery, which was founded in 1784. It was destroyed in the 1930s and rebuilt after 1990. (B,L,D)

Day 5 Drive
En route we visit the Wall of Uglugch, which was built between 10th and 12th centuries. A highlight of our day is a beautiful meadow full of edelweiss. We drive on to the Rashaant rock, where we see deer stones, inscriptions and rock paintings from different epochs. (B,L,D)

Day 6 Hike
We stay in the area today and explore our surroundings on a hike. (B,L,D)

Day 7 Drive
We head on to the town of Dadal, which is mainly populated by Buryats. This ethnis group of Mongolia speaks its own language and lives in log cabins instead yurts. (B,L,D)

Day 8 Hike / Drive
Today we take a tour to Deluun Boldog, said to be the birthplace of Genghis Khan in the Secret History of the Mongols. One theory has it that he is also buried here. Whether this is true remains a mystery – to this day, around 120 expeditions have failed to find Genghis Khan’s grave. (B,L,D)

Day 9 Drive
Our next stop is the town of Undurkhaan, the centre of Khentii Aimag. Here we visit the local museum and observe the business transactions at the market. Then we travel on to our camp. (B,L,D)

Day 10 Drive
Today we go to Huduu Aral, the site of the first Mongolian city of Aurug, where the Secret History of the Mongols was probably written. (B,L,D)

Day 11 Recuperatio
Today is a day of recuperation, and you are free to spend it however you choose. (B,L,D)

Day 12 Drive
We drive today to Ulaanbaatar. On the way we visit Genghis Khan’s Equestrian Statue. An evening concert introduces us to the delights of traditional Mongolian music. You hear the sound of the Mongolian horsehead fiddle and throat singing. (B)

Day 13
Our time in the steppe has come to an end, and this is our last chance to explore the capital. This day is free for you to spend as you please. (B)

Day 14
Return journey, organised individually. (B)
